British American Tobacco is a sleeping giant of the United Kingdom stock market that may be about to wake up.

The U.K.’s FTSE 100 Index is trading at record highs, closing above 8,000 points for the first time in its history earlier this month. British American Tobacco’s (ticker: BATS.UK) total return of 6,891% since the index launched in 1984 is the largest of any original constituent company, according to FTSE Russell data.
