Are algorithms speech? That’s the core question now before the U.S. Supreme Court. The answer could throw the internet into chaos.

Algorithms are simply rules used to solve problems. Internet sites use them to determine what content you see on social-media services, such as Facebook and TikTok, online stores Amazon.com and Etsy, and content sites Netflix and YouTube. Every site needs a way to figure out what to show you. If YouTube simply offered you the most recent content, you’d get a random set of videos that you might not want to watch.
